Does Jam Go Bad? How Long Does Jam Last?
Jams naturally have a shelf-life of six months, that is, if you have opened it and is storing it in the fridge. Otherwise, jams have a shelf life of about one to two years if it is still sealed in its original packaging.
Jams do go bad even if they are sealed in their original packaging if they are not stored in proper conditions. They should be stored in a cool place, even though it is not necessarily the fridge.
When the temperature is warm, the air inside the jam bottle could condensate and the moisture would allow the molding of the jam.
It is also important to use clean spoons and knives to scoop out the jam in order not to contaminate the product. Otherwise, a resulting reaction could take place and it would give room for mold to grow on it.
How to Tell If Jam Is Bad? Jam Shelf Life!
It is easy to tell if jam has gone bad. The first signs would be that, it would lose some of its consistency.
It would look quite runny unlike its usual thick jelly like texture. This could occur probably because it has not been stored in a fridge after it has opened.
In another case, jams will usually have a moldy greenish to yellowish appearance forming on the surface.
This would also be because of the fact that the container has not been airtight or it has not been stored in the refrigerator.
In which case, the whole product along with the container should be immediately thrown out and a trip be made to the local convenience store!
